Miches is a trendy new destination north of Punta Cana which offers a lot of new potentials – but is much more difficult to reach for travelers. However, this comes with the added value that most places here are still virgin, incl. one of the most pristine beaches in the Dominican Republic just around the corner from Miches. For 2024 and 2025, a lot of new resorts are about to open, further increasing the infrastructure for travelers in Miches. As I have visited Miches already a couple of times – incl. just recently – I am happy to share all the secrets of this new hidden gem with you, incl. the best resorts, the coolest excursions and the most genuine adventures you should not miss before the big mass tourism is arriving here.

Miches vs. Punta Cana?
Officially, Miches is not part of Punta Cana as it is more than an hour north of the main tourism area of Punta Cana. However, as the shortest way to Miches goes through Punta Cana International Airport, holidaymakers still have the option of visiting Miches when flying to Punta Cana.
If we compare the numbers of Miches vs. Punta Cana, it is obvious that Miches in no way can compete with Punta Cana. However, that’s also not the reason why you might want to travel to Miches. Miches is still a hidden gem and especially an interesting choice if you’re looking for authentic experiences, off-the-beaten-track activities, pristine beaches and less hustle and bustle. It is also a great option for those who have already visited the main area of Punta Cana a couple of times.
Just to give you an idea, here is a comparison between Miches and Punta Cana:
Comparison between Miches and Punta Cana | Miches | Punta Cana |
Inhabitants | 20000 | 100000 |
All-Inclusive Resorts | approx. 5 (2025) | more than 80 |
Airbnbs | approx. 100 | more than 5000 |
Miles of Beach | approx. 17 | approx. 25 |
Restaurants/Bars/Food Stalls | approx. 10 | more than 300 |
Miches is in no way comparable to Punta Cana – but still can be a very interesting destination for your holiday. I think you get the point.
Why you should visit Miches?
As you can see from this short introduction, Miches is definitely special and a very interesting new tourist destination. Here are a few reasons why you should visit Miches:
- Home to some of the most pristine beaches in the Dominican Republic, among the Playa Esmeralda
- Much closer location (=shorter transfer time compared to Punta Cana) to stunning natural attractions such as Salto de la Jalda, Los Haitises National Park, Playa Esmeralda, Samaná or the annual whale-watching (January to March)
- More authentic experiences in the Dominican countryside
- Less seaweed compared to Punta Cana
- Extremely modern resorts as most of them just open 2024 and 2025 (only one of them is open since 2020)
Of course, there are also some disadvantages when traveling to Miches, such as fewer excursion options, fewer resort choices and the longer airport transfer from Punta Cana International Airport.
Where is Miches?
Miches is approx. 65 miles northwest of Punta Cana and approx. 1.5 hours driving away. The road to Miches is very well-maintained and hardly sees any traffic once you have passed the hotel area of Punta Cana.
The majority of Miches’ beaches face the north which is very important when it comes to seaweed – usually, you have less seaweed influx compared to Punta Cana.
Airport transfers to Miches
From Punta Cana Airport to Miches
The No. 1 airport to fly to when visiting Miches is without a doubt Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). It is a straight 1.5-hour drive on a well-maintained highway without too much traffic.
Airport transfers should be somewhere around 100 to 150 USD one-way. My recommendation for you is to prebook your airport transfer to Miches as this avoids haggling with the pushy taxi drivers at the airport. Here is a safe and reliable private transfer to Miches*.
For the cheapest option to Miches, you can check out this offer here*.
Theoretically, you could also go to Miches by public transport – even from the airport, but this would require that you
1) speak at least a little bit of Spanish
AND
2) don’t have a lot of luggage.
The bus to Miches leaves three times a day (7amm, 1pm, 5pm) from the Sitrabapu station in Punta Cana. The only viable bus option after a flight would be the one at 5pm.
Still, as long as you’re not on a backpacking trip to Miches, I would not really recommend the public transport option. A private transfer is the easiest and also most comfortable option.
From Santo Domingo Airport to Miches
Santo Domingo definitely should be only your second choice of airport when you’re planning a vacation in Miches because instead of an easy-going 1.5 hour drive like from Punta Cana it is a 2.5-hour drive from Santo Domingo’s Las Americas Airport, which is more uncomfortable as it passes many more villages and consist of more winding roads.
If you are still landing in Santo Domingo (or have already booked your flight) and want to go to Miches, here is the best private airport transfer*.
All-Inclusive Resorts in Miches
Miches’ all-inclusive resorts are different than the typical resort in Punta Cana, mainly because:
– they are all brand-new (mainly built and opened in 2024 and 2025)
– they are all located at pristine stretches of beaches
– they’re usually smaller than their Punta Cana counterparts
Currently, there are 5 to 6 resorts open or planned to open during the next month. You can find my personal recommendations for each of them in the following sections:
The family favorite: Club Med Miches
Let’s start with Club Med Miches in this quick resort overview for Miches, as Club Med can be seen as kind of the pioneer in Miches. They were the first resort in Miches back in 2020 and maintained this status until the end of 2022 when the former Temptation Miches started their operations (now closed, see more information below at Sunrise Beach Resort).
With family-friendly pools, restaurants, suites and activities, among them the kids club, the baby Club Med (for an extra charge), a splash pad, a gardeners house, nanny care on demand (for an extra charge), kids challenges, team games or creative activities such as ninja boot camp, nature detective, hero’s parade; Club Med Miches is a real families favorite.
But also adults will have plenty of fun, as they can choose between 40 different included activities, an elegant Club Med Spa by Cinq Mondes or regular yoga sessions from professional trainers. A new and creative dining concept also will threat your taste buds – and kids and adults alike will love the secret chocolate room.
The affordable resort: Viva Miches by Wyndham
If you’re looking for an affordable holiday in Miches, Viva Miches by Wyndham could be your first option – at least when it comes to the brand’s standing. Viva Wyndham in the Dominican Republic usually features affordable and well-priced vacation options, especially in Bayahibe and Samaná. For Miches, they currently (as of November 2024) have a promotion running with rates starting at around 310 USD per room per night during the high season and around 275 USD per room per night during the low season.
You can expect a well-designed all-inclusive resort at Miches’ main beach. The hotel features the typical standard all-inclusive amenities of 5 restaurants, among them 4 à-la-carte, daily activities, nightly shows, non-motorized water sports and – as a little bonus – an oceanfront pool with swim-up bar.
The beach is absolutely pristine as there is nothing around for miles, even though it is not the whitest beach, it is rather a tad golden to grey. However, it is a perfect location for nature lovers as you can explore a virgin beach completely on your own.
Viva Miches by Wyndham is set to open in December 2024.
The elegant all-inclusive: Zemi Miches
When it comes to luxury and design, Zemi Miches currently takes over the top spot in Miches (maybe until Secrets Playa Esmeralda is going to open). With elegant suites, amazing views and a high-end approach, Zemi Miches (Curio Collection by Hilton) is one of the high-end resorts in Miches.
When choosing your room at Zemi Miches, you should definitely have a look at the amazing Bungalow Collection rooms, which are beachfront and offer marvelous views of the ocean. They also come with a unique jungle experience restaurant, which is exclusively for Bungalow Collection guests. You’ll also have access to the Royal Palm Lounge & Ciba’s Elite Rooftop Oasis. If this is a bit above your budget, you can also opt for a regular Azure Club room, which comes with VIP services and premium privileges.
But also with a regular room you can enjoy top-notch service at Zemi Miches by Hilton. Just a look a the restaurant options is already mouth-watering, as this resort in Miches offers a bit more than just the typical all-inclusive experience: a Thai restaurant is not very common in the Dominican Republic and the Taino à-la-carte restaurant offers a unique blend of culture, tradition and gourmet of the native inhabitants. Furthermore, you’ll find a fruit market at Zemi Miches, where you can enjoy smoothies, freshly cut fruit and delicious natural juices.
Zemi Miches is set to open in February 2025.
The low-key option: Sunrise Beach Resort
You have never heard of Sunrise Beach Resort? This might be for a reason as this resort just next to the village of Miches (actually the only resort in Miches where you can really walk into town – the others a significantly further away from Miches) has been known until 2023 as Temptation Miches Resort, but closed its doors after a pretty unsuccessful approach. A couple of months later it was reopened and rebranded to Sunrise Beach Resort, but without much marketing or a strong positioning in the market, it was (and still is) under the radar of most travelers. In the middle of 2024, it was acquired by Marriott and is now Sunrise Beach Resort Miches by Marriott.
Even though it is a Marriott property now, the resort’s appearance hasn’t changed a lot. It is still a very quiet and easy-going all-inclusive resort in Miches. The biggest draw is that you can walk into town and experience the real authentic Dominican small city respectively village life. Rooms, food and service are ok without offering any spectacular innovations.
What is indeed interesting about Sunrise Beach Resort is the pricing. Rooms are already available (as of October 2024) starting from 279 USD per room per night in low season, which is currently among the lowest deals you can find among all all-inclusive hotels in Miches.
The adults-only accommodation: Secrets Playa Esmeralda
If you’re looking for an adults-only resort in Miches, Secrets Playa Esmeralda will be your top choice, starting from April 2025. The resort, which will be home to around 500 rooms, is located at stunning Playa Esmeralda, approx. 10 miles away from the town of Miches – and around 65 miles from Punta Cana International Airport.
Playa Esmeralda is one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches in the entire Dominican Republic. Currently, there is not a single building of infrastructure at this beach – and starting from April 2025 it will just be Secrets and Dreams Playa Esmeralda. With more than 2 miles of golden powdery sand, this is one of the Caribbean beaches you usually have to take expensive day trips to if you want to enjoy such kind of a beach – here at Secrets Playa Esmeralda you can have it every day, nearly 24 hours.
Considering restaurants and amenities, there are still some important information missing, which will be available once we’re getting closer to the opening date. You very likely will have access to neighboring Dreams Playa Esmeralda.
Secrets Playa Esmeralda is scheduled to open in April 2025.
The all-generational hotel: Dreams Playa Esmeralda
Right next to Secrets Playa Esmeralda, you will be able to find the sister resort Dreams Playa Esmeralda, aimed at families and travelers of all generations. As with all the Dreams Resorts in the Dominican Republic, Dreams Playa Esmeralda will feature unlimited à-la-carte dining without reservations, premium alcohol at all bars, a kids club, a teens club and daily and nightly activities and entertainment. For those looking for some additional services and VIP perks, Preferred Club rooms will be available.
Dreams Playa Esmeralda will be located at stunning Esmeralda Beach, whose advantages I just explained above at Secrets Playa Esmeralda.
Dreams Playa Esmeralda is supposed to open its doors in April 2025.
Other Accommodation in Miches
To be honest, if you go to Miches, I would highly recommend staying in an all-inclusive resort. Not because it is dangerous or because I want to promote all-inclusive travel (I actually always encourage my readers to head out of their resorts and explore the country, the countryside and the many hidden gems), but simply because the infrastructure is not made for individual tourism in Miches (yet).
Currently, there is no proper hotel in the area of Miches which is available without all-inclusive. However, if you’re looking for some kind of special interest accommodation in Miches and the surrounding area, here are a few options:
Coco Loco Beach Club – some very basic rooms right at the beach of Miches, next to the town, ideally for backpackers or super low-budget travelers. Not bookable online afaik, prices should range around 30-40 USD per night.
Margarita Ecovillage* – a new and very thoughtfully designed eco-lodge with lovely casitas built on stilts, guaranteeing stunning views as the property is located on a smaller hill. Nature comes first here without foregoing on comfort and service. A perfect option if you want to combine an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana with 2 or 3 nights in Miches.
Domescape Miches* – a stunning glamping accommodation close to the famous landmark Montaña Redonda, with amazing views and outstanding amenities – a dream for adventure and nature lovers. Laguna Limon and Playa Limon are also very closeby and worth a visit.
Beaches in Miches
Miches itself isn’t famous for its beaches, but in the town, you can find some of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic. Here is an overview of the best beaches in and around Miches
Playa Esmeralda:
Playa Esmeralda is the most spectacular beach in the area – you shouldn’t miss it when you’re planning a holiday in Miches. It is more than two miles long, has usually pretty calm water and is absolutely pristine – at least until now, as two all-inclusive resorts (Secrets + Dreams Playa Esmeralda) are being built with a scheduled opening in 2025. The quality of the beach is on par with the beaches in Punta Cana – but you have the beach all on your own. Enjoy this paradise as long as it lasts – it is really worth a separate trip. The only way to reach it is by taxi or rental car – or walking, in case you stay at Club Med Miches*.
Playa Arriba:
Playa Arriba is the closest beach to the town of Miches and can be reached by walking from the village. It is not the prettiest right next to town but it gets pretty empty and natural (aka pristine) if you walk a few hundred feet. Once you have passed Sunrise Beach Resort, you have the beach all on your own and can walk a mile or so in the fine sand, even though it isn’t very white.
Carlyle Cove:
I am not sure if Carlyle Cove is really the right name for this beach but this is at least how you find it in Google Maps. For me, it is just an extension of Playa Arriba, even though you can not always access it from there (due to the Rio Jovero) walking. Therefore Carlyle Cove has similar characteristics compared to Playa Arriba but is completely off the beaten path. The only piece of infrastructure you will find here is the Viva Miches by Wyndham Resort in the middle as well as the Zemi Miches Resort at the northeastern end.
Playa Limon:
Playa Limon is one of the Dominican Republics’ wild beaches – again a beach with no infrastructure, and in this case also with no resort being built, hence you can expect that this beach stays pristine for a couple of more years. This is not a swimming beach as the currents and waves are usually a bit more on the rougher side, but the scenery here is incredibly pretty. If you have a rental car anyway or if you visit Montaña Redonda with a private driver, it is definitely worth stopping at Playa Limon for some photos.
The best excursions in Miches
Excursions in Miches are still “under construction” – not literally, but due to the limited amount of tourists so far, most travel agencies and tour operators have yet to set up their programs and tours for Miches. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t do anything there – there are some really great highlights in the area, which I am presenting to you in the next sections.
There are 2 great advantages when it comes to excursions in Miches:
– tour groups are usually much much smaller
– the transfer times to get to the attractions are much shorter because most places are close by.
If you book an excursion from your resort in Miches, do yourself a favor and do NOT book the typical Punta Cana excursions, such as Saona Island, Scape Park Cap Cana, Coco Bongo or Bavaro Adventure Park – because this would mean you have a similar experience than everybody else, but an at least 2 hours longer (sometimes more) transfer. Better stick to the attractions and experiences you can have right around Miches, which are listed in the next sections. This is one of the BIG advantages of planning a vacation in Miches: you have some of the best and most beautiful hidden gems of the entire DR’s East right in front of your door (whereas Punta Cana travelers would have to travel at least 1.5 hours each way to see them).
Montaña Redonda*:
If there is one top attraction in Miches, it would be Montaña Redonda. This unique hill just 10 miles away from Miches (and even less from some of the resorts) offers spectacular 360 panorama views, unique photo opportunities and some cool activities. It is still a unique place in the Dominican Republic. You can either hike up there or take one of the safari trucks, which many excursions include. See availability and prices of the tour from Miches here*.
Los Haitises National Park*:
Los Haitises National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in the Dominican Republic – and planning your vacation in Miches instead of Punta Cana is your chance to reduce the travel time to the park from 2.5 hours to just 1 hour. The park itself offers incredible stunning beauty, mainly through the hundreds of islands, the untouched nature and the several animals you can see here, among them pelican birds, manatees (if you’re lucky) and many other smaller birds and species. Tours usually include a boat ride through the park. See availability and prices of the tour from Miches here*.
ATV & Buggy tours*:
Similar to Punta Cana, you can also find buggy & ATV tours in Miches. Of course, the lush countryside with many farmers’ trails and a few villages is perfect for this kind of excursion. You’ll get to know the authentic Dominican way of life and will learn a lot of new things about what it really means to visit the Dominican Republic. When booking a buggy tour in Miches, just make sure it really starts somewhere in the area (like the tour recommended through the subsequent link) and not down in Punta Cana. See availability and prices of the tour from Miches here*.
Catamaran Tour to Media Luna:
Very close to town there is another attraction of Miches, which is hardly known so far among travelers: Media Luna, in English “half moon”. It is a half-moon-shaped area of very shallow water in the middle of the ocean, which has an ultra-turquoise color – compared to the deep blue you see around this area. Along with this tour comes a great catamaran vibe as well as a snorkeling stop, hence it is the perfect trip if you want to spend some time on the ocean.
Whale-Watching in the Bay of Samaná*:
Whale-watching is one of the main attractions in the Dominican Republic and with spending your holiday in Miches you have the big advantage of being right where some of the tours are starting. The large humpback whales are visiting the Bay of Samaná every year between January and March and tours are either starting right from Samaná or from Miches. Instead of having a long day from Punta Cana, you can either do this as a half-day tour from Miches or as a full day if combining the excursion with the island of Cayo Levantado. See availability and prices of the tour from Miches here*.
Samaná:
Speaking about Samaná, you can also explore this fascinating peninsula from Miches. Just hop on a boat and you’re right there, ready to explore the stunning waterfall Salto El Limon or easy-going Cayo Levantado island. The great thing here – again – is that you skip the long transfer from Punta Cana, hence your experience will be much better than the average traveler.
Salto de la Jalda*:
If we mention the word “waterfall”, Salto de la Jalda is also a must-do when talking about Miches’ excursions. However, it isn’t for the faint-hearted, more for those looking for adventures, as this is the highest waterfall in the Dominican Republic and is only accessible by either a long horseback ride or a 2.5-hour hike (one-way). But it is well worth it, as Salto de la Jalda is hardly frequented by any tourists – if you’re lucky, you have the entire spectacular waterfall – 400 feet in height – completely on your own. See availability and prices of the tour from Miches here*.
Jet Skis*:
I am not a big fan of jet skis but Miches has one big advantage: while jet skis are completely forbidden in Punta Cana, in Miches they are not, giving you the chance to have this experience very close to your hotel. See availability and prices of the tour from Miches here*.
H3 Things to do in Miches (DIY)
Ok, the table above focuses on guided excursions, but what if you want to explore some places without tour guides? Luckily, there are a lot of things to do in Miches where you can go on your own – maybe even more than in Punta Cana as the area around Miches is not as commercialized as Punta Cana and is much more authentic.
If you have a rental car or a private driver, you can definitely check out the following attractions in Miches. You can read more about it here if driving in the Dominican Republic is a good idea.
- Playa Esmeralda: As mentioned above in the section about Miches’ beaches, Playa Esmeralda is an incredible beautiful hidden gem and absolutely pristine. Go for it as long as the impact from resorts is still minimal.
- Montaña Redonda: You can visit Montaña Redonda on a tour, but you can also go there on your own if you have your own means of transport. If you’re an active traveler, I would definitely recommend hiking up there. Make sure to check out my separate article about Montaña Redonda for further information on entrance fees and how to get there.
- Salto de la Jalda: If you’re an avid hiker, Salto de la Jalda is a must-visit in Miches. However, the highest waterfall in the Dominican Republic should only be tackled if you have experience walking on hiking trails without signposting (GPS required) or with a proper local hiking guide.
- Cascada Blanca: If Salto de la Jalda sounds too far for you, you can check out Cascada Blanca, another waterfall in the area of Miches. The hike there takes around an hour (one-way) and the waterfall is not less impressive than its bigger brother. Check out my article about the waterfalls in Punta Cana for further information about how to get to Cascada Blanca.
- Loma Linda: Loma Linda is the little sister of Montaña Redonda – but absolutely not commercialized. In fact, there was once a restaurant and viewpoint up there but it is now abandoned. The hiking trail to Loma Linda starts at Rancho Terranova close to Miches, which is also a great place to relax and eat some traditional dishes from the countryside, as they have a pool and a restaurant. Check out my Punta Cana hiking guide for more information about the hiking trail.
- Playa Limon: Playa Limon is another great thing to do around Miches if you’re road-tripping the area. It is not always suitable for swimming but you can walk along the beach and soak in this wild atmosphere.
- Los Haitises National Park: One of the most beautiful national parks is also an attraction you can visit on your own – but you might end up on a similar tour compared to the guided excursion described above, as there are not many facilities in the park which you can explore on your own. Either a boat or a hiking guide is necessary to explore Los Haitises National Park.
H3 Restaurants in Miches
The restaurant selection Miches is very limited as the town is still far away from the typical tourist tracks. Especially as there are hardly any apartments or guesthouses in Miches (where people need local restaurants), the gastronomic offers in Miches are very limited.
However, this also means that everything you find in Miches is truly authentic and local. Don’t expect English menus here and better bring your translator apps in case the waiters only speak Spanish.
Here are three places I have visited personally and I can recommend:
Al Coco Restaurant: full-service restaurant right at the oceanfront, spectacular view, full menu, local dishes and authentic vibe
El Universio del Sabor: a typical Dominican home-cooking “Comedor” with local dishes and an extensive array of fresh juices.
Coco Loco Beach Club: a rustic beachfront restaurant with fish and meat on the menu. Right on Playa Arriba, but not always open – try it on the weekends.
H3 The weather in Miches
The weather in Miches is very similar to the weather in Punta Cana – so please refer to this article for further information.
H3 Seaweed in Punta Cana – is Miches the better option?
As you might know, the entire Caribbean, incl. Mexico, Florida and other beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean or the Caribbean are affected by seaweed influx, especially during the seaweed season from approx. March to October. You can read more about this phenomenon here in the article about sargassum in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic.
However, not all beaches get the same amount of seaweed. Bayahibe for example is a famous example for beaches close to Punta Cana which are nearly always seaweed-free – and Miches is another great option if you’re looking for resorts in the Dominican Republic without seaweed. Especially Playa Esmeralda, Playa Arriba and Carlyle Cove, which are all facing the northwest, see very rarely seaweed.
Therefore, particularly Zemi Miches and Viva Miches are perfect options if you’re looking for resorts in the Dominican Republic without seaweed, even though the guarantee is not as close to 99% as in Bayahibe.
Conclusion: should you visit Punta Cana or Miches?
The question, if Punta Cana or Miches is better, is not really a question, as both destinations are completely different. You can visit them both without a problem, even on the same trip if you want to design your holiday a bit more different than the typical standard Punta Cana itinerary.
However, if you would have to decide on one of both destinations, I would opt for Miches if
– you have already been in Punta Cana and want to try something new
– beaches with the least seaweed possible are important for you
– Punta Cana is too crowded and too touristy for you
– you want to experience the authentic Dominican Republic far away from all the tourist crowds
– want to explore a new travel destination which yet has to be developed
– you don’t need parties, dozens of souvenir shops and areas to walk around (all resorts in Miches are pretty remote so far)
– you don’t mind the longer transfer time from Punta Cana Airport
If you can answer a few of these questions with yes, Miches might be the perfect travel destination for you. Feel free to let me know in the comments if you have any further questions about this unique hidden gem in the Dominican Republic.
