What is Montaña Redonda?

Montaña Redonda is a hemispherical mountain amidst a flat part close to the coastline between Miches and Punta Cana. Due to its plain surrounding, the mountain is very prominent and visible from a long distance. On the other side, this prominence allows spectacular views from the top, including a panorama of fantastic beaches such as Playa Esmeralda and Playa El Limon.

What sets Montaña Redonda apart is the opportunity to take unique photos, which is based on the amazing panorama views, but also on the additional gadgets which are available once you reach the top of the mountain. Among them are hammocks right on the edge which allow you to soak in spectacular views and flying brooms which can help for photos where you seem to fly. However, the highlights are the various giant swings (also known as Punta Cana swing or Dominican Republic swing) set on the mountain which allow for unique photos as they let you glide far over the edge of the mountain. Have a look at the following Montaña Redonda photos to see what its all about.

How far is Montaña Redonda from Punta Cana?

Montaña Redonda is about 40 miles or a one-hour drive away from most resorts in the Punta Cana area. The road was inaugurated just a couple of years ago and is therefore in particularly good shape. The next town to Montaña Redonda is Miches.

How to get to Montaña Redonda?

You can do Montaña Redonda as a guided excursion or as a road-trip from Punta Cana, or just add it as a stop on your way to Los Haitises National Park.

If you decide on a road-trip in the Dominican Republic, you can have a look at this price comparison for the best rental car companies in Punta Cana*. Especially for Montaña Redonda a self-drive option is very suitable as the road is super easy to drive. Once there, it is also self-explaining how to proceed, so there is hardly any Spanish involved.

However, if you prefer an organized excursion from Punta Cana this is also possible. You can check out one of the following options.

The best Montaña Redonda tours

Deciding on visiting Montaña Redonda with a guided tour is not a bad idea, especially if you don’t have a rental car. When looking for the best excursions from Punta Cana or Miches to Montaña Redonda, you have a lot of different options, especially as in the last years, more and more tour operators have added Montaña Redonda excursions to their program. But don’t worry, the famous swing in the Dominican Republic still is an off-the-beaten-track adventure in Punta Cana.

Montaña Redonda tour with Playa Esmeralda

The typical tour when visiting Montaña Redonda from Punta Cana is a combination with Playa Esmeralda (or sometimes called Costa Esmeralda as well). This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic and therefore absolutely worth a trip. First, you can enjoy the spectacular views from Montaña Redonda in Miches and afterwards, you head to Costa Esmeralda to enjoy a walk at the beach and a dip into the ocean.

Montaña Redonda tour with Macao Beach

An alternative to Playa Esmeralda is Macao Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Punta Cana among locals. You might stumble upon Playa Macao in one of the other excursions in Punta Cana, such as the dune buggy adventures or the surfing lessons, hence in my opinion Playa Esmeralda is a better deal when visiting Montaña Redonda, as you’re in the area anyway. Still, Montaña Redonda + Playa Macao is a better option compared to Montaña Redonda + Costa Esmeralda if you’re looking to drive as little as possible.

Montaña Redonda sunset tour

If you just want to experience Redonda Mountain without any beach add-on, why not head there for a sunset tour? Thanks to the elevated location, you have great views of the surroundings. Another advantage of this option is that usually around this time of the day, there are fewer visitors, hence with a bit of luck you might be the only guest enjoying the marvelous views and making unique Montaña Redonda photos.

Montaña Redonda tour with Los Haitises National Park

Montaña Redonda in Miches is a perfect stopover on your way to Los Haitises National Park when planning a road trip in the Dominican Republic, but it also marks a good combination when looking for two spots you can combine in your Montaña Redonda excursion. Just note that it is a pretty long drive (approx. 2.5 hours from Punta Cana to Los Haitises National Park), but the good thing is that this stop at Redonda Mountain breaks the trip up so it doesn’t feel that long.

Los Haitises National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the Dominican Republic and therefore absolutely worth a trip. You can see a lot of wildlife, such as frigate birds, manatees and pelicans. You can expect a superb day out in nature, with sightings of endless mangroves, secluded islands, mystic cloud forests, spectacular views and lush bays. Usually, Los Haitises tours are done by boat, hence this excursion marks a great day of diversity.

Montaña Redonda tour with Los Haitises National Park and Cayo Levantado

If you’re looking for something even more comprehensive, you can combine Montaña Redonda (with the aforementioned famous Punta Cana swing), Los Haitises National Park and Cayo Levantado into one excursion. This is an exciting tour with a lot of highlights this area north of Punta Cana has to offer, even though it is also pretty exhausting. Therefore, this Redonda Mountain tour is not recommendable for kids (check out here the best family activities in Punta Cana). But if you go for it, you will see a lot!

Have an ATV adventure at and around Montaña Redonda

The last option to explore Dominican Republic’s Montaña Redonda is to book an ATV adventure that not only explores the countryside around it but also continues up to Montaña Redonda. This is a special way to get to know more about the area of Miches and its surroundings.

Accommodation at Montaña Redonda

There are no accommodation right on top of or at Montaña Redonda.

However, the following options are reachable within 30 minutes of driving time approximately:

Hotel Atabey, Miches: a small and basic hotel in Miches, perfect for individual travelers in the Dominican Republic (call +18095535131 for bookings)
Club Med Playa Esmeralda, Playa Costa Esmeralda: the first all-inclusive resort in the Miches area on a wonderful stretch of beach (which is one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic) and not far away from Montaña Redonda (check prices and availability here*)
Temptation Resort, Miches: a sensual playground for adults, this resort is just minutes away from Miches and therefore only a 20-minute drive from Montaña Redonda (check prices and availability here*)

My experiences at Montaña Redonda

I have been to Montaña Redonda a couple of times and loved it as you can reach it so quickly from Punta Cana, but you are likely to see just a few other tourists. The mountain itself is unique and I have never seen something similar before when I first visited. In the meantime, we have been to Ecuador where you have a similar mountain with giant swings but Montaña Redonda is still very high on my list of the things to see in Punta Cana.

Once you are there you can decide if you walk up the mountain or take one of their trucks to climb the 900 feet to the top. It is a quick (approx. 30-45 minutes), but a rough and steep path, so if you are not in a good shape, better take the truck. On the other hand, the views during the walk and also from the top of Montaña Redonda are mind-blowing.

When you have arrived on the summit, you can walk on your own to the different areas of the mountain, take stunning photos and use the gadgets mentioned above. The highlights are the swings that count for unique Montaña Redonda photo opportunities and a lot of fun while flying so high up in the air. There is also a basic restaurant on the peak which serves snacks and fast food.

Montaña Redonda is a perfect trip for Instagrammers, adventurous people and visitors who like more the low-key attractions than the big and popular sights. I love it exactly for those reasons. Furthermore, it offers a great stop right on the road when driving from Punta Cana towards Miches and the Los Haitises National Park.

  1. Good day! Interested in your excursion to Mount Redonda. I will be staying at the Be Live Experience Hamaca Garden Hotel in Boca Chica. Please tell me if it is possible to make a transfer for an excursion from this place in Boca Chica? How much will it cost? Is it possible to make the transfer back not to Boca Chica, but to Puerto Plata (Isabel de Torres funicular)? Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Anna,

I think the only way to get to Montaña Redonda from Boca Chica is with a rental car (check prices here: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/recommendation/rental-car-santo-domingo/) or with a taxi.
You can also check out this tour, it starts from Santo Domingo and they pass Boca Chica on their way to Montaña Redonda: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/recommendation/montana-redonda-from-santo-domingo/

Getting from Montaña Redonda to Puerto Plata is super far, that’s at least a 7-hour drive. The best to deal with that would be a rental car and making 1 or 2 overnight stops in between.

      Cheers from Punta Cana
      Chris
